Superheroine Battle Arena – The Phantom, part 3

Metrocity

SBA Arena: Locker Room A

Invincibelle leaned against the wall of the locker room while chatting on her cell phone. “Well, I’m just waiting to fight a giant robot apparently to determine if I’m ‘qualified’ to be a part of the league. No, I’m not worried… Maybe I’ll just let it punch me until it runs out of power.”

Statuesque’s voice came across the line, “Hah. I don’t think I’d recommend that… but if you’re not worried I’m not worried. Well, I’m a little bit worried about you getting all hot and sweaty grappling scantily-clad super-women.”

Eva smiled, “Don’t be jealous… we can have our own wrestling match when I get back to Cape City.” She was prepared to escalate the conversation to a much more intimate level until she heard a grating voice in the background yelling “Is that Belle?? Put her on speaker!” She sighed, “Hello, Dr. Ivankov.”

Ivankov was yelling too loudly into the speaker phone, “Invincibelle! This is Dr. Ivankov! We are piecing together a plan to track the Ithornic Leech!”

“Good,” she answered. Back at the research lab, Invincibelle’s first instinct was to contact The Tower and have them lock down the Arena. But Ivankov convinced everyone that that was a stupid idea. If one of these leeches took out an entire stellar empire, we can’t think of it as a mindless bug. It is probably intelligent, able to conceal its presence until its powerful enough to slaughter an advanced civilization. We need to track it covertly, don’t alarm it, hide as it hides. So now Eva was here, enlisting in the Superheroine Battle League. “I’d hate to think I’m just here to wait for the thing to try to consume me.”

“Ah, that is the thing, Invincibelle!” he was still shouting. “This is still theoretical since information is so scarce on this creature. But we think since it was held in that stasis pod for so many years, the energy powering the cell is probably anathema to it!”

Eva cringed at his yelling. “How does that help us?”

“Because you, Invincibelle, have cells that were metamorphized by the same alien energy! It is entirely possible that you are uniquely poised to destroy this phantom menace!”

“That sounds promising… I have to go, they’re about to announce my entrance. Keep me posted. And Ivankov, tell Statuesque that I love her so so much and every moment away from her is an eternity.”

“I will tell her no such thing!”

“Still on speakerphone, Belle.”

“What? How do you turn this infernal…”

“Give me my phone!”

Invincibelle chuckled and ended the call. She tossed the cell into her locker and headed towards the door. Demolish a giant robot… must be Tuesday.
